On 13th January the government published its long-awaited White Paper on the overhaul/replacement of the 1983 Mental Health Act.

This is badly needed and there has been repeated and failed attempts to do this effectively since 1983.  Too many vested interests being one problem.

This one is particularly welcome because of its proposals, amongst other things, to separate out provision for people with a learning disability, or who suffer from autism,  to end practice of using prisons a ‘places of safety’ for people with mental health problems, and to tackle discrimination and racism.   Let us hope this becomes law.
